Wrestling History

On February 22, 1947, Klamath Union wrestled it's first meet ever. Dutch Simons' Pelicans hosted and lost to Hank Juran's visiting Salem High School squad 36-13, in a meet refereed by Olympic great Chet Newton. Klamath Union apparently had some interest in the sport during the early 1940's, but no lasting program developed. Some wrestlers had qualified for the 1942 state tournament, but apparently did not compete. Later in the spring of l947, Simons took his young team to the state tournament in Canby, but didn't do very well. When they went to the OSAA state tournament in 1948, it was the only the school's second experience in that level of competition. The team was reedy. The Pelicans won the tournament with four champions, beating out teams that had strong wrestling traditions extending back to before World War II. more
